Name: Grant Eikelboom
Nickname: Had plenty in the past (Boom Boom, G-Banger, etc), but nothing yet in cycling circles… unless you count the Driller allocated nickname of ‘Not Quite a Driller’.
Bike: Lapierre Xelius 800… until it got busted up at the Tom Lowry Memorial. Now I’m riding a Pinarello Paris (my usual winter bike anyway) with a 3kg wheelset until I can get something else sorted. Being such a heavy thing it at least makes a great training bike, especially in the hills.
Years riding: 5 or 6 maybe?? Took it up when I first moved to Bunbury as rehab for footy injuries and have never played footy again since!
Km per week: 300-350 in an average working week.
Type of rider: An all-rounder I suppose – a ‘Jack of all trades but master of none’. Favourite type of riding though is definitely climbing (and of course descending) and I’ll go looking for any hills at any opportunity.
Why do you ride: Because if I’m at home I have to change nappies!… Nothing beats being out in the cool fresh country air and watching the sun rise over the Fergy Valley or through the Collie River Valley (even if you have to leave home at 4am to get out there!).
Do you have a goal in 2016: Having made the jump up to B grade this year after racing only a handful of C grade races the past two years, 2016 will be primarily about getting race experience and building a team culture alongside other members of the SWCC Racing Team. The races I’m most looking forward to and hoping to be strongest at are the Wellington Dam Classic (State Champs), and the Tour of Margaret River.
